About MusicSelect

Who is Eligible for MusicSelect?

MusicSelect membership is open to all students of eligible schools. Students living in most residence halls are already members because the program is now a part of their residential services. Non-resident students interested in MusicSelect membership can sign up at any time.

Faculty and staff may have an associate membership, which entitles them to a substantial discount on the Napster service.

What does MusicSelect cost?

MusicSelect is free to students living in university residence halls. Non-resident students can sign up using a credit card for $24/year (pro-rated by quarter).

School faculty and staff pay music service providers directly rather than MusicSelect so there's no fee to join, but the benefits are reduced.

What are the benefits?

For the 2007-2008 service year, MusicSelect offers Napster. Napster is both a store and an "all-you-can-eat" suscription service. MusicSelect provides you with the service that gives you access to all 5 million songs in the Napster music library. New for 2007: Napster now works on MacOS and Linux!

This table summarizes the student costs and benefits. Of course, for residential students, the savings are even greater!

About Legal Downloads

There are three main ways that legal online music is distributed with copyright protections. They are:

Streaming
Streamed music is music played directly from the provider's server. Members log in from any network-connected computer and can listen to any and all songs in the provider's library. Since members can only log in while their membership is active, access to the music ends when membership expires.. Renewing membership restores access. Napster offers streaming.

Tethering
Tethered downloads are music tracks downloaded from the provider's server to a member's computer. These songs can be played whether members are online or offline as long as the membership is active. Once membership expires, the downloaded songs no longer play. Renewing membership restores these songs without having to download them again. Napster offers streaming..

Buying
Music bought and downloaded from the music store. These songs can be played on registered computer whether they are online or offline, burned to CDs, or transferred to compatible MP3 players regardless of membership status after purchase. Napster offers this kind of music.
